• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I am thinking of buying a mini dv camcorder for my vacation in florida next week, just curious if anyone has any suggestions for one around $300. Does anyone have a Canon ZR-800 series or JVC GRD-750 or 770? Do any of these camcorders have issues with the firewire on a MacBook Pro C2D 2.16.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

This is the camera that I've recommended to two other posters. I've had experience with it in my television production class and my mom owns one as well. They're good for family use and its a pretty good camera for the money.

Stick with a Sony. Even a cheap HC-26 or 28. Canon and JVC have problems handling low light situations and the picture gets very grainy.

Thats a pretty generic statement. The Elura 100 works pretty decent in low light settings. I have first hand experience with it.

Let me say this: Brand names don't dictate quality.

I can't speak for all Canon products, but the ones I have worked with (GL2, Elura 100, I can't remember that last one but it was an older Elura model) worked well for their intended users.
