Is it just me or is Spaces in Leopard like the exact same thing as the f9 button in tiger?

No, Spaces is like virtual desktops in Linux. You can separate your open applications into different work areas for better organization. For example, if you're a web developer, you can have your web development apps in one desktop, your email programs and web browser in another, and your Office apps in another. This keeps one desktop from being cluttered with all your unrelated applications.

For a good example of what this will be like, you can try VirtueDesktops for older OS X versions.
