This rumor has been around since last year. The picture at the bottom has been proven to be a fake and there have been similar looking patent applications flying around all over the place. There was even one where the bezel was touch sensitive and you used that to navigate the iPod.

There is one simple reason why Apple won't be released a touch screen iPod anytime soon: it will cut into iPhone sales. No explanation needed

Apple doesn't seem to be having any trouble selling iPods, particularly now that almost all models are readily available under $300. My guess is that Kash is right, they will let the iPhone hysteria cool down for a little bit before they make the iPod more iPhone-like (and I'm sure that's ultimately the plan).

My only hope is that they don't wait too long. News of Universal's refusal to renew a 2 year contract with the iTunes store doesn't bode well. It may mean they are throwing their weight in a different direction by going month-to-month. It would be really bad for Apple is they signed an exclusive contract with another online music store. Apple needs to keep the iPod looking attractive - a total redesign, capitalizing on the popularity of the iPhone might be just the trick.

Exactly. A new, hot product just in time for Christmas (aside from Leopard) would be perfect timing - especially since the iPhone sales will probably start to cool down by then. 4Q '07 is going to be a sweet ending to an unprecedented year for Apple.

That's an old Photoshop, but the concept is good. I think they should keep the scrollwheel. It's a good concept for the iPhone, but I miss the touchwheel! Also, I bet they could fit hard drives in there easily since there's no cell phone stuff taking up space. 120gb widescreen touch iPod anyone?
