I tried to shutdown my MBP- light still on

i tried to shutdown my Macbook Pro and the light is still on...isnt it supposed to go off? (i usually just put it to sleep so the light in that situation is normal..) but ive already shut it down and its still on?

2.5ghz Penryn MBP, 4 Gb Ram, 512mb 8600M GT, 250gb HDD & Black 30gb iPod, Black 16gb iPhone 3G
the light is supposed to go off when u shut down.
it just hasnt shut down properly, mines done it a couple of times.
from memory i just opened it up and held down the power button and it shut down completely
