IPOD with Window/Mac ?

I am new here and I am relatively new with Mac's I recently purchased a new G4 Ibook, and an IPOD, My questions is can you used both a Windows box, and a Mac to share music files, sync'g and stuff, when I tried it last night it asked it I want to change my profile and rewrote my music on my Ipod :(
Your help would be appriciated as I am trying to move over to the Mac side and just use my Ibook.

20" iMac C2D 2.16ghz, 13" MacBook 2.0ghz, 60gb iPod vid, 1gb nano
You need to have it formatted for Windows for it to work across both platforms...OS X can read both Mac and Windows Formats but windows can only read windows
