I have a 160G external 3.5" hard drive in a usb housing.

How can I gain access to it to write? I can only read the contents.

Its formatted NTFS and has been on windows PC

Cheers in advance :Blushing:

You need to reformat it to Mac Format (HFS+) or to FAT-32. If you choose FAT-32 you can still use it on Windows if you desire, if you choose HFS+ you'll have to get a Windows App that allows Windows to read HFS+ or not use it on a Windows machine.

Either format can be done on your Mac, FAT-32 is simply called MS-DOS in Disc Utility when you select the format.

What File system does it use?

elbolao23, yes you can copy from the Hard Drive to the Mac and vice versa as long as it is not NTFS. If it is NTFS, you can copy from but not to the drive.

Plug it into your PC and find out. It will tell you under the drives properties. If you originally formatted it with XP, I can pretty much guarantee it's NTFS.
