get rid of recent file list

is there anyway to get rid of the recent file list under the apple. i dont like the whole idea of when you go over it and there is like 20 apps on a page long list. its such an eyesore.

In System Preferences under Appearance change the drop down menus to None under the "Number of Recent Items:" area
