macbook 2GHz intel core duo 2 GB ram Mac os x 10.5 Leopard
i have a 1st gen macbook 512gb of ram (currently) and 80 gb harddrive
im looking to upgrade to a gig or so of ram but im wondering just how much this is going be benefit me in performance

From what I understand, the difference is very significant. Considering that my MacBook Pro uses about 256MB of RAM just to boot, that doesn't leave a whole lot of elbow room for applications to load - especially if you want to run Windows via Parallels.

Anyway, an extra 512MB of RAM shouldn't cost you very much (around $35 with shipping). Check http://www.crucial.com for guaranteed compatible memory upgrades with a lifetime warranty. Their memory selector will help to ensure you get the correct type.
