The original file size of the video is 1.19 GB but when i try to make a dvd out of it using toast it takes very long.

So far it has been about 5 hours and its only done 46%

Is this normal?

Are there any other freeware app's that can make a dvd which would play on any standalone dvd player

How fast is your computer, How fast is your DVD burner, how fast it the DVD Media.

A 16X DVD burner burning to 1X media is going to crawl. A low end G3 or G4 is going to crawl no matter what the DVD/Media specs are.

Don't forget, Toast has to convert whatever it is to DVD format, and the speed of that depends largely on your CPU.

OK Basically I got a macbook (and I love it!!!)
I've got 1gig ram - 2ghz C2D processor - the dvd disc burns at 8X speed - i think my dvd burner is 16X or 8X speed but not sure. it doesn't say the speed in system profiler

sorry I made a mistake, its not the burning process which is long, its the encoding process which is long - when it converts the mpeg file into and video_ts folder.

Is this still normal for 1gig ram and c2d 2ghz processor

That is normal. Encoding video can take hours, depending on how large the file is, what compressions are being used, etc.
I had a video take close to 8 hours once.
You just have to wait it out. :)

Well, overall mine took like 14-15 hours.

The original file size was 1 GB I'm not sure about the compressions though...how do i find that out?

What format is the original Video file in before you have Toast convert to DVD format?

Some formats take a LOT longer to convert than others.

The original Format is just .mp4 - does this format normally take long to convert to DVD format

For an MP4 that sure seems a bit long considering your machine. Will try one later on my iMac G5 and get back to you.

Are these .AVI files on the Hard Drive?

Forgot to ask you, what version of Toast are you running? The older versions were native PPC and would be very slow on an Intel Mac.

Encoding takes forever. Espically if you're encoding .avis or anything like that. I was burning tv episodes of hey arnold and it took me 6 hours for only 6 episodes that were 20 minutes each (using toast 8).

is there any other freeware app that can encode an mp4 file into a dvd format (like the video_ts folder)

I don't really want to purchase any software like visualhub, is there any other freeare alternative.

I found that the app called burn can make a dvd video, but when i do it burn re-incodes the video into and audio and video file, the audio file is in the wav and the video format is in .mpg

Is this normal?
