transfering music from a windows formated ipod to a mac?

I just bought a new macbook pro (so much better than my old dell!). So here is the question. I have lots of music on my ipod that isn't on my PC. i want to transfer the songs either directly onto my mac, or back to my PC, and then transfer from there. i have been searching for third party software, but i can't find anything that is doing what i want it to. anyone know how to do this?

BTW, you should never keep music solely on your iPod. If the drive goes south or you have to reformat it, POOF, it's gone.

are there any free programs?
