I have had the eject icon appear in the upper right of the screen next to the clock and bluetooth symbol, when I click this it says 'close superdrive' but when you click it nothing happens and the icon remains.

The machine is also whirring constantly.

This happened after one of the Apple updates, one of which was to iTunes.

Any idea what this is or how I get rid of it?

hold down the apple key, then click on the icon and drag it out of the menu bar.

"The installer is hidden in some folders we usually recommend staying out of. On your main hard drive, dig down into System > Library > CoreServices > Menu Extras. Inside that window, double-click on the icon called Eject.menu."
