Mac booting up w/ two black bars on sides of screen, looks like a safe mode?

I had to restart my computer because a game froze and now when it started up it has like these two 1 inch black bars on both sides of the screen. All the pictures are blurry and weird looking. It looks similar to a safe mode in windows? How can I get out of this?

check the screen resolution, also if you have an external monitor plugged in unplug it and see what happens.
