When an Apple OS is upgraded, how does it do it? I'm talking on a technical level. Is it as good as a fresh install, or does it leave bits of code and files from the old OS lying around?

It's efficient. Choose erase and install, or archive and install. The latter will put all your files in a folder.

No crap from the old OS will be left.
