10.4.9 software update hanging

After upgrading to 10.4.9 in the apple software updater and then restarting, the apple logo appears, and the spinning wheel at the bottom just keeps spinning, and it won't go any further no matter how long I leave it. Any ideas as this is doing my head in!

hhhmmm...
1.insert the mac osx dvd and boot from it(C) and repair permissions
2.boot from an external os(another mac,xternal hd)
3.reinstall os x WITHOUT complete erase
