Hey there
i finally bought my first mac, and im really happy about it =)
but i have couple of questions, and since im the only one that i know that owns a mac i have no one to clear some doubts i have..
If you wanna help me, I´ll apreciate it
For Example,
General questions:

Is there a key command to shut down the mac without using the mouse to get to it? :p
Is there a button to go to the begining or end of a sentence? (for a faster text manipulation)

Software questions:
I enjoy writting, and i was not able to find other aplication sides -Text edit- or -microsoft Word-, Do you now of a application designed for writters? (macwriters?)
Azureus is the best torrent application?
Is Safari the best browser? or should i use opera or firefox?
I use the term Best just for an easier understanding...

Thats all for now!
Thanks O:)

Best Browser - Is a relative term and really a matter of personal preference
Seems most long time Mac users stick with Safari.
While most switchers seem to prefer Firefox.
There are more, Camino, OmniWeb and others.
I've tried 'em all and continue to stay in the minority with Opera as my personal favorite.

The best word processing thing is probably Pages, which is part of Apple's iWork suite, along with Keynote, a PowerPoint style thing which everybody thinks is better.

Is there a key command to shut down the mac without using the mouse to get to it? :p

Control Option Command Eject (top right corner)

Use your newfound powers wisely. ;p

Is there a button to go to the beginning or end of a sentence? (for a faster text manipulation)

Command <-- = beginning of line
Command --> = end of line
Option <-- = previous word
Option --> next word

Hold Shift during any of the above to highlight whatever is "in between" for quick text selection.

also:

in lists (such as in List View in the Finder or in iTunes):

Option Up = top of the list
Option Down = end of the list

Is Safari the best browser? or should i use opera or firefox?

Hmm... well, it depends on what you want.

Firefox
+ most compatible with sites (due to its popularity)
+ hundreds and hundreds of add-ons (more than any other browser): http://addons.mozilla.org/
- look and feel isn't very Mac OS X-like
- a bit slow, because its code is non-native (that's what allows it to be cross-platform)

Safari
+ fast browser
+ looks more like a Mac OS X app
+ add-ons (but not as many as Firefox of course): http://pimpmysafari.com/
- a little short on the features end
- not as compatible with sites as Firefox

Opera
+ a LOT of features
- least compatible, even more than Safari (because at least Safari is the default browser of Mac OS X)

But if you want something with Firefox's compatibility and Safari's Mac look-and-feel,
give Camino a try.
+ as compatible as Firefox* (because it uses Gecko, the same rendering engine as Firefox)
+ Mac OS X look and feel
+ add-ons (but not as many as Firefox of course): http://pimpmycamino.com/

*might have to change the user agent to Firefox to fool sites into thinking it's "Firefox"

Celtx is a good one that I use all the time, mostly for screenwriting. Best thing is it's free.

http://www.celtx.com/

Scrivener is another free program designed for writers. I haven't used it yet but it looks the goods.

Have fun.

I still go back and forth between my PC and Mac.

I like Firefox, I run it on both machines and it makes bouncing back and forth easier.

For text I like Writer from the OpenOffice.org suite. It feels a lot like Word 2000 which I am very familiar with. I also run it on my PC and Mac. Hey, it's Free!

Hey ppl!
well i have a new set of doubts/ideas, wish u have the time to help me.. O:)

Dvd disk zone, is there a way not to be disturbed with the issue of having a 5 limit change, its ridiculous, VLC does not work. probably because i dont accept th zone change before it, but it i cancel the zone change it ejects me the dvd:Angry-Tongue:

Ive seen the dock divided in 3... how is that?
a program like irfanview that allows me to smartly load the next img...

i want to use my mac as a home ftp server... is there a utility for that?
or do i have download a program to create it, if so, recomendations?

Boot camp:
my camera does not work, not that i really care, but every time i boot windows the whole -new hardware found- pop up shows, and it tells me that there´s and error...

since i installed boot camp, every time i restart the mac and the ipod is connected the machine does not boot, it just stays on the white screen, i need to turn it off, disconnect the ipod, and turn it on again,
i know i can avoid this by restarting the machine without the ipod, but it happens.. is this always like this?

a key to activate the numpad :p ?

peace out

This can be changed by simply getting a theme from the Firefox website to integrate FF into the Mac OS X theme.

The "Zones" as you called it is called Regions. That is not just a Mac issue, All DVD drives have I believe a limit of 5 Region changes.

By the way, you still using Camino?

Did you try changing the user agent to Firefox?
If you ever encounter problems with certain websites, you should try this.

Type about:config in the address bar and press Return.
Type "user" in the filter at the top and you should see the following entries:

general.useragent.vendor
general.useragent.vendorSub

Double-click general.useragent.vendor and change it to Firefox
Double-click general.useragent.vendor and change it to 2.0.0.5

Camino is usually blocked from the full version of Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail Beta.
By doing this, it can get it with no problem.

ive decided to stick with safari, just loved how fast it loads, plus being able to move the tabs with the mouse is reallly usefull for me!
thanks all for the help =)
and now if any one can help me with this..
same issue, turn off the mac with the keboard, on leopard the previous command just sleeps it.

and if any of you had the pacience to read this heres a really good trick i found:

Open terminal and type in:
defaults write com.apple.dock wvous-olddesktop -bool false

Then, restart the dock by typing killall DockThis way, when you “show desktop” (default F11) all of your windows combine into a little window on your desktop.
