I don't know what I did but somehow I've lost the search boxes that used to normally appear whenever I opened Safari. Have tried restarting, rebooting, and have looked all through the Safari Help menu. Any ideas on how to restore them??

If you mean the search box next to the URL strip, right-click somewhere on the toobar under the URL strip, choose Customize Toolbar and drag Search back into the toolbar.
