Sorry if this is a dumb question but are you using AIM or iChat?
If you are using AOL's version (AIM) try Mac's version, iChat. It connects to AIM nicely. I have never had a problem.

You can still login into AIM with AdiumX.

iChat should already be installed on your Mac. If not, you'll need your original Mac disks that came with your laptop/tower/whichever.

It should be in the apps folder and it should also be in the dock. It looks like a blue chat bubble but it has a white camera icon in the center.

Can iChat be used to chat with an MSN or Yahoo Messenger user?

A better subject line for your question would have been "aim always disconnects". A good subject line can help attract people experienced with your problem.

Open the Preferences for iChat and click on the Accounts icon. Click the plus sign at the bottom left and you should see a pop down window with Account Type as a popup selection. I see three possible selections there; .Mac, Aim, and Jabber. You should be able to figure out the rest.
