Is there a way to make, for example, an external HD icon on the desktop pop up in a certain place when mounted? rather than just on the right side in sorted order?

id like to have my external pop up in the bottom left when its turned on...

That has bugged me for some years too. If there is a way, I have not found it yet.

The only way I found to do it (bit of a kludge) is to make aliases of the drive icon(s), then go into the Finder preferences and untick "Hard disks."

The aliases have the little arrows on them, but the icons stay where they're planted.

That's a good idea.

Nice idea. ill try it for a bit :)

i dont use the show drive info setting, but if i did, it would obviously rule this method out

having some trouble.

after going to finder prefs, and general, i see "show these items on desktop"

ok so i have externals hooked up and obviously my internal. Well when i uncheck HDs, only the internal vanishes. When i uncheck CD/DVD all external drives go bye bye.

now this would be fine and all but what if i insert a cd/dvd, then i cant see it.

this isnt an option for me if this is how it is.
