Is there a way to change the settings in Finder, so that stuff appears in column view (instead of the default icons view)?

Finder > Preferences > General Tab > open new windows in Column View.
Finder > View > As columns.
Always close finder window in column view.
If finder is stubborn, change to column view and close window immediately ~ ie don't do anything else.
It should get the message :)
Have fun.
