My macbook has only had a kernal panic once before this. It was a long time ago. Here is the report. What do you guys think went wrong??

That line leads me to believe that there could be something wrong with your aiport card. Although one panic does not mean that there is something wrong. You should keep us posted on anything else that happens with your computer in the coming days...

i am going to be completely honest with you, I do not really know how to read these things, but since its so early in the morning i figured nobody would be up to look at this. Hopefully more people will be up later to help you with more information.

It's 10:54 p.m for me :)

Thanks for your input PBG4. I will keep an eye on Macky. I don't know how to read those things either. I just thought it might help.

I think it means that your due for three more if your experience is anything like mine. I've had five with my Macbook since I got it. However I haven't had one in something like three months. The log of the panics were similar to yours, mentioning Airport, USB, bluetooth, generally all the stuff that my machine was using at the time it went TU.

Last night I was doing the usual stuff with my Mac, and while I didn't get a Kernel Panic, as such, it wouldn't launch any more apps (like Activity Monitor so I could see what was going on) and the CPU fan started going into high gear. I was able to quit apps and restart, but it goes to show that not everything is all sunshine and lollypops in the Mac world all the time.

Hopefully, your kernel panic was 'transient', and you'll either get a few more, or it will 'fix itself', which is what seemed to have happened to mine. Funny thing is, I'm a computer hardware and software professional, and I have no idea why my Macbook crashed when it did, or why it doesn't anymore. In my experience this happens with a lot of computers of different architecture and OS type. At the same time it's one of the most frustrating things because one wants to know why a given machine is crashing, but when it's random...

Anyway, here's hoping you either won't get another one, you'll get another one or two and then they'll not ever happen again, or you'll be able to determine how to repeat it so you can show it to an Apple Genius so they can fix it.

Netty,

Your kernel may have panicked, but I wouldn't if I were you. OS X crashes once in a while, and I've had two or three panics since coming to Mac. For that matter, I've crashed Linux in the past, locking it sometimes, getting a kernel panic others. "Linux doesn't crash." Yeah, right.

What you should do is note what you were running at the time. In my experience, two or more applications are vying for the same resource, memory addresses for instance. The OS *should* be protecting resources from contention from multiple applications, but holes occasionally exist. When applications encounter such holes, the OS goes belly-up.

For now you should run Disk Utility (Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility), highlight your hard drive, and do a "Verify". If you get any errors, post about it here. My guess is you're probably okay.

What to do if it happens again?

1. Note what time your machine crashed.

2. Note what apps you were running.

3. Boot your machine.

4. Run Disk Utility and verify your hard drive.

If you're sufficently geek proficient...

5. Open Terminal.

6. Type:

less /var/log/system.log

You'll get a view of some of the things happening in your machine. To go to the end of the file, type

G

To move through the file, scroll up and down with the arrow keys. What you're looking for is anything that happened around the time of your system crash.

To get out of "less" (the program you're running), type

q

and it will end. Close the terminal as needed.

In closing, you want to discover what caused the crash. With luck it won't happen again. Should it do so, you want to see if you can find the cause. If and when you do, then you can potentially upgrade whatever seems to be broken. When panics are rare, it's tough to find the problems.

Good luck!

I had a spate of them last week. Sort of random. Turned out to be a file system corruption. They happen from time to time. They are necessarily hardware related nor an indication of pending doom.

Thanks for all the advice guys! When the KP happened I was only using Safari. Browsing here and on myspace. The 1st time I got a KP, I was pretty much doing the same thing.

I haven't ran the disk utility thing but I'll do that now. What exactly does verifying the disk do??

EDIT: Uh-Oh, It says a volume needs to be fixed. How do I fix it?

It just checks for problems. You'll have to boot from the DVD if it finds any problems that need fixing though.

Verifying the disk will ensure that the OS knows where everything is located on the disk. Files and programs are mapped to different locations on the drive, and even with some corruption the system can often figure out where things are actually located. Nevertheless, doing a verify will tell you if everything is fine or not. If fine, then no problem! If not, then you might need to actually run your system from your installation DVDs to fix your system. It's not hard, just a bit different if you've not done it before.

Regarding the use of Safari when it panicked, my initial reactions are that you could have been running something through a plugin that took your machine down. Alternatively, it could just be that there's some bug in Safari.

Ok, I ran the disk and it said it needed a minor repair and it fixed itself! :)
