How do I add better speakers to my iMac? I see that on the back there is a jack for headphones and next to it there is a jack wit a symbol I don't recognize, is that where speakers would go?

speakers can go in the headphone jack.. unless you are looking for optical, which i think that is what you are looking at.

I'm ignorant about how the word optical could be used when talking about speakers. So I'm not in the market for them. I know that in my PC days there were different jacks for headphones than for regular speakers. But I guess apple just keeps it simple.

Yeah they do a good job keeping it simple. On the pro line models there is actually a difference between the 2. They are the same, just in different locations.

Optical audio is just the data is transmitted via a light, for cleaner, better quality audio.
