Long shot here, but can I use the memory from my G5 in my Mac Pro? I'm selling the G5, but I reckon what I lose by taking out the 1gb I added to it would be less than buying 1gb for the Mac Pro.

The G5 (single 1.8) came with 256mb, and I added another 1gb. System profiler reports;

2 x 128mb 3200u - 30330
2 x 512mb 3200u - 30330

The Mac pro (dual 2.66 xeon) reports;

Riser A - 2 x 512 DDR2 FB-DIMM 667mhz.
then 2 empty slots.

Riser B has 4 empty slots.

I'm guessing the 1gb of G5 memory isn't going to work, right?

Unfortunately, you are correct. The memory type in the G5 does not match the one in the Mac Pro. The G5 uses 184-pin DDR 400 MHz RAM whereas the Mac Pro uses the FB-DIMM 667 MHz (essentially DDR2 RAM except it's fully buffered compared to normal DDR2 which isn't), which are not pin compatible.

Looks like you'll have to shell out money for more Mac Pro memory. Keep in mind that FB-DIMMs need to be installed in pairs. So if you want 1GB, you need 2x512MB and 2x1GB for 2GB of memory, etc.

Newegg has some decent prices for FB-DIMMs. A single 512MB stick goes for $52.99, so $105.98 isn't bad for server memory.

OK, thanks. The problem is I live in Brazil, where the price of this stuff is more than double.

Course, on the plus side I can get $1,600 for the G5 here. I'll pick up more memory next time I'm in the US or Europe.
