Printer profile for more accurate prints

I've just got a Canon iP5300 and am using it to print from Adobe Lightroom 1.0.

I've tried the seven different ICC profiles, none of which are very accurate on the paper I'm using (Canon Photo paper plus glossy).

Are there alternative profiles available for free download anywhere?

I've heard that you can use software to make your own printer profiles. Does anyone know of a freeware/shareware program worth a try?
