External HD + Mac = Okay?

heard that some external HD's don't work on macbook pro because they
run via USB and no power supply is needed. (via mains plug ) and the USB is power is not enough to use the HD...is this true for the following HD's and the normal macbook?

i haven't had a problem with running 2.5" drives up to 80Gb with one usb connection on my regular macbook (not pro).

i think this may have been an issue with some older ibooks and such, but i haven't heard of any issues lately. additionally, most newer 2.5" ext drives and drive enclosures seem to come with the double usb cables to tap two ports if necessary.

no problems here, with a mbp and a 60gb usb 2.5

I have an iBook and my WD 80GB USB powered HDD runs just fine. Should be fine on a Macbook.

The problems with power only tend to happen if the root hub is overloaded, e.g. if you run two such drives of a single USB interface. For normal use, and if you plug it directly into the machine rather than via a hub of any kind, you should only need a single USB connection.
