grace period for free OS upgrade?

I heard in another topic that there is usually a grade period in which, if you purchase a Mac computer with a older OS close to the release of a newer OS you can upgrade for free. I was wondering, in the past, just how long has this grace period been? 2 months? 30 days? I'm asking because I need to get a Mac for school, and I'd rather not wait for the release of Leopard in October.

Thanks!

Ah, that's no good. Thanks for the speedy response. I suppose I'll just go ahead and get that Mac now and just pay for the upgrade later.
