I’m looking at some Crucial RAM at Buy.com. It looks like the RAM has the same specs as the one listed on the Crucial website and costs about $30 bucks less after rebate. Can someone tell me if I’m missing something or should I be fine if the specs match?

Thanks for the help!

Looks like it would work just fine for your Macbook Pro.

Though if you wanted to skip out on wasting time with a rebate, I would suggest checking out Newegg. There's a really nice 2x1GB set for only $83.99

Thanks for the suggestion. I was going with Crucial because I'm not familiar with any of the other brands. But maybe I will check out that company as well.

How much memory will the MBP handle? I just ordered the 17 inch MBP w/3 gig but I will be using it for Video Editing (i also ordered the Final Cut Studio 2 edit suite). Just wondering.

Installing more than 3 GB RAM on your MBP is actually a waste of money.

There's some chipset limitation that makes your MBP access 3.3GB RAM at most. Although phisically it's possible for you to install 4GM RAM on your MBP (2X2 GB), you would be losing around 700MB due to it's limitation.

That's why Apple is kind telling us that we can upgrade our RAM to 3 GB max.

I read a good review online last year in which the reviewer ran Final Cut on the Macbook (not the pro) and compared it with the G5, MBP and maybe a Powerbook. The Macbook did very well -- not having a separate video card didn't hurt it a bit. The MBP did even better.

My current MBP has 1 gig of RAM and it does fine with Final Cut. I didn't notice any difference in rendering time compared to the G5, but I did notice that it took longer to export to quicktime movies -- about 2-3x longer. I think once I upgrade to 2 gigs of RAM, that difference will decrease if or will be eliminated completely.

I wonder how well it will all work with the new version of Final Cut Studio2? I pre-ordered that and should have it by the 5th of next month.

I don't know, but the previous Final Cut had already been written for the new Universal programming language or whatever it is. That is why it was running so well on the new machines.

To end this thread, I checked and the part numbers are the same for the recommended Crucial package and the Buy.com package. So they're the same.
