The 24" displays 1080p videos without scaling down
The 20" monitors have to scale 1080p down slightly to fit on the screen

All that high definition deals with is the resolution. 720p means that there are 720 vertical lines of resultion, 1080p means there are 1080 vertical lines of resolution.

The vertical resultion for iMacs is 900 (17"), 1050 (20"), 1200 (24"). So they all can display high definition content, it just depends on which computer you use and video size you use for how it is handled.

To better understand just watch some of the HD trailers on apple.com (heres the new harry potter ones http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/harrypotterandtheorderofthephoenix/hd/) and look at what each of the different formats looks like on your screen
