I don't understand. This burner is supposed to handle 16x burns to DVD+R. Yet Toast 8 reports that it's maxing out at 8x. What the heck??

When you insert a disc for burning, what are the burn speed that appear in Bold face?

Could you be more specific? Burn speeds where? If I go to "Disc info" in Toast, it says it can burn up to 16x. Yet it doesn't.

The drive's firmware examines information on the blank disc to determine what speeds are claimed to be supported for burning. These speeds appear as bold face in the speed drop down menu in the Recorder Settings menu (only, of course, after the disc is inserted and recognized).

i dont have no mac's
cheaper discs may also claim to have high write speeds but your burner might recognize this and to be safe burn at a lower speed.

Hmm, nevermind. I did an actual burn of about 720MB to a DVD+R on both my PC and my Mac.. both came out at 2.5 mins. It's just that Nero on the PC reports 16x speed which probably isn't accurate.. or Toast is wrong and it's getting a faster burn speed. Either way, it looks like the drive is consistent with my 16x NEC burner on the PC.

Verbatim are my favorite media. I don't think I have had a single coaster with verbatim. If you buy Apple branded disc's you are actually buying Verbatim

Ditto on the Verbatim. Favorite here for years now. Got a hold of a Pioneer new 18X DVD RW and the 16X Verbatim's get perfect burns at 18X! Am very impressed.
