Autoupdate - screws me

Well I got my dad his eMac....he bought like 30 songs on iTMS..We hook up his 1st Gen 10gb iPod....The iPod is recognized but I can not add any songs or playlists to it when its set on manual. So I go into the iPod properties and I set it on Autoupdate the selected playlists....I created a playlist with the songs he wanted and had it set to just update that one list. Well it decided to wipe out the 1309 other songs on there and not even put on the new list

everything was fully updated....the ipod is completely erased....i was able to get it back to manual updating but still lost 1300 songs most of whose CDs I have lost
