MacBook Pro 3gb Upgrade??

Hey folks,

I'm a new member here, been a mac user all my life.

I am currently running a 15" MBP Intel Core Duo.
I am looking to upgrade my memory, and I was hoping to get to 3gb.

I've done some searching, and I have seen different answers. I know that my MBP has 2 slots, one is filled by a single 1gb chip. So I've heard that the MBP non Core Duo 2's can only will only support 2gb. Some people seem to concur, and some people seem to disagree.

So my question is, does anyone have more than 2gb in a non core duo MBP?

I would love to have a 1x2gb chip along side the current 1x1gb chip.

Any help is appreciated.

According to the specs the older ones take 2GB.

LOL...This must be a rhetorical question.

What the OP is asking is the CORE DUO 2 MBPs can use 3GB RAM and was wondering if his plain CORE DUO could do the same. The URL's I provided say no. 2GB is plenty anyway.

What I heard was a chipset limitation. Don't quote me on it but that is what I have read a few times now.

dtravis is correct, it's basically a limitation in the chipset used in the Macbooks (has to do with a memory overlap). There's no physical limitation to sticking two 2GB sticks in, but you won't be able to access all 4GB if you do (you'll lose somewhere around 700MB, so buying a 2GB chip only to be able to use 1.3GB isn't exactly a smart idea)

This is actually a good move on Apple's part. Instead of letting its customers install 4GB and have them find that it doesn't recognize all of it, the company tells you from the start that 3GB is the max so you don't waste money buying that extra 1GB. This is unlike other manufacturers who sell their customers 4GB and only state after the sale that you may not be able to access all 4GB.
