"Ypur startup disk is running out of room"

I know where the startup disk is and thats about it, I don't know what it does nor why or what I would delete from it..but I got this error, its never came up before and it came up in middle of a very long file converting session so I'm hoping it doesnt mess it up
please help asap!

Are you booting your OS from your HD?

Your startup disk is usually the partition on your HD where the OS you boot from is located. Is your HD getting full?

You're running out of hard drive space. You need to delete stuff. Have you emptied the trash lately?
