airport dead after sleep

I installed the security update and since then whenever the computer goes to sleep, it won't connect once it wakes. It looks like it doesn't "see" the network. Trying to join by logging in doesn't work.
The only thing that seems to work has been to restart, which is a bit frustrating, since that means every time i want to go online i have to restart. The Airport bars are greyed.
any ideas?
