OK, so OS X Tiger has this thing under 'Sharing'.. Apple Remote Desktop. If I enable it, and turn on the "allow users to connect to this computer with a password".. then a VNC server is enabled, and I can use UltraVNC to connect to the Mac.

Yet.. Apple sells this $300 solution called Apple Remote Desktop. I don't get it. It seems to already be included with OS X. So what's the difference?

Apple Remote Desktop seems to be a client and administration package for installing software remotely and things. You seem to get more features than just a VNC client.

i think the apple remote desktop is for more pro people. but for home users or small businesses VNC is fine.

ARD offers features such as drag and drop file transfers, multiple remote installations, snappier performance than VNC, etc. etc.

For most private users, VNC is probably sufficient... if you use remote connections daily or have more than 1 Mac, you might want to look into ARD.

ARD is probably overkill for me. I just want to be able to connect to my home Mac from work (Windows machine) to check email and such.
