installing router on imac

hi . i am a new user to imac and want to install router instead of using built in router. i have a belkin wireless router and i can go through steps of running set up which checks my mac config then it asks how i connect to internet which is dhcp ethernet cable so that is checked but comes back cant create? so what am i doing wrong any help please

Was the computer hooked up to your DSL/cable modem and connected to the internet before you tried to set up the router?

can't create what? Routers establish connections based off information provided to it. Routers do not create connections - is this what you mean?

I am confused, are you talking about installing software or setting up a "connection" to a wireless router, or set the iMac up as WAP and have other computer connect to it. Please explain better.
