Is it possible for me to format the iPod in such as way as to be able to use it on my Mac at home and on my PC at work?

I don't think so, as I can't update or add songs on my Brother's PC Formatted iPod and the same goes for my Mother's Mac Formatted iPod (as in my Brother can't update it).

Give ipoddisk a try. My Nano is formatted for PC but I was able to remove tracks from it on my Mac with no problems at all. I've really only used it the once though, but it sounds like it should do the trick.
