disk repair won't verify

I have an ibook g4 12 inch and onyx says i need to do a disk repair but when i got into disk utilities and verify disk repair it says first aid failed: Disk Utility stopped verifying “ ” because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure on exit

any ideas?

Try booting from your install DVD/CD and run Disc Utilities.

The HD can't be repaired most likely as it's mounted, so by running from the install Disc your HD can then be repaired.

Also have you recently updated OnyX? Some people have experienced these error messages since updating. When I lauch OnyX and it alerts me to this new updated version ... I'm not game to update.

Try doing a Repair Disk by inserting the Mac OS X install CD and botting while pressing the C key. You will get into the OS Installer, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the Menu Bar and do a Disk Repair from there.
