Let's get ready to rumble! Who will win?

I do want to get a PS3 within the next few months and this has Blue-Ray technology but will it be a white elephant in the long run?

The old VHS V Betamax was won on the basis of the American porn industry, VHS being the cheaper option despite Betamax being the better quality. It looks like this one will be decided on the gamers. BUT Sony hasn't had the greatest history in all things tapeable, (a word? Prolly not), Betamax, MiniDisc, Super Audio-CD, UMD.

Your views?
I'd appreciate it if you could answer me as if your were speaking to a very small child in all matters that plug in. Thankyou. :D

I believe this battle is all down to who wins the games console battle

looking at the price difference and the library of films out, i believe HD will win but i can see this being an on going battle, and with talk of blue ray burners being fitted standard into expensive computers i believe will boost the blu ray's popularity.
I dont believe than either format is totoally "better" than the other, as every tv has a limit, every camera has a limit to how many pixels it can take.

Now, look at the support...
HD video cameras
HD digital cameras
Consumer dvd players now HD compatible.

I believe it will go either way.

I don't think there will be a winner, or a loser, in this case. This will be a case where duel standards will exist side by side with the consumer being able to buy hardware that will support them both. It's already in the works and the market is more than big enough to support both.

6 months ago, Blu-Ray was dead, or so the 'experts' tried to convince us. Virtually all the indications now though suggest it's all over with Blu-Ray victorious.

With most of the studios onboard, more films now being released and finally competitive pricing, there is no way Blu-Ray can now lose. Blu-Ray films are now also using more advanced compression techniques rather than MPEG2 which it used upon release meaning Blu-Ray films are really looking astonishing.

It is quite amazng how things turned around after PS3 was launched, even though many would have us believe PS3 has not been a great seller, it has probably single handedly won this race.

This article explains how things turned around this year

Based on my knowledge which is limited, hd-dvd is cheaper now (the players i mean) but the PS3 is at that price level, $599. I haven't seen computers with hd-dvd players but have seen blu-ray drives in computers, even a blu-ray burner. And I think they finally came out with the hd-dvd thing for xbox 360.
I believe all major studios support one format or another and I believe all but 2 support blu-ray. I think the porn industry supports hd-dvd.
I also think hd-dvd drives have faster read speeds than blu-ray which is pretty important but blu-ray discs hold 25gb per layer so 50gb for a dual layer disc and hd-dvd discs hold 15gb per layer (30gb dl disc.)
With technology changing and getting cheaper, I hope blu-ray wins. But I think I heard they are making a dual player that does both formats, so maybe it really won't matter.
Peace,
Bryan

Both:
HDDVD for movies
Blue Ray for high capacity data storage

I have no evidence to support my prediction.

To expand upon what Baggss already said, I'm already seeing a ton of dual-use Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs. I have a feeling that ultimately we'll see double-sided discs that do both. Just conjecture on my part...

I have just bought a PS3 and a 1080p TV to go with it, Blu-Ray films are amazing quality as are the games and it is so easy to use it should be a winner ....

... but, I also bought a Betamax VR and a Phillips VCD so maybe I'm not the person to be listening too! :blind:

Meh, not at the moment. If you're buying for the main purpose of the Blu-Ray DVD player then maybe. Just take into consideration that there are absolutely no games out for the PS3 that make it worth owning, and there won't be until September.

And for the record, I own a PS3 (got it at a good price).

I'm quite partial to Motor Storm myself, awesome graphics and physics and the music ain't too bad either.

I can't wait for the full Grand Turismo HD release.

I like motorstrm as well, but it is still not a system seller. When games like Heavenly Sowrd and MGS 4 are out, then I will be really happy to own a PS3.
