Could be a bunch of reasons. What's the URL? I'll take a look for you.

How can a width be "poor"?

It's either too wide, or too narrow, correct?

Different monitors have different resolutions, so there's no way to get your site to look the same on every computer.

well in 800x600 it doesnt appear right and you have to scroll right...
i have a widescreen so it appears fine.
But my dad *company manager* isnt happy with it like that
need to reduce it so it appears okay on an average monitor. *not widescreen*

The widths of your elements are all greater than 800. If you want an 800 screen to not scrol left-right, you'll need to to set the widths to 750 or less (to make room for the scroll bar, margin, padding).

BTW, the average screen is 1024x768, not 800.
Owners of companies have the tendency to think everyone has the same setups they do. I've had to break sites in the past just so it looks good on one computer - the owner's.

But even at 1024, the page is still scrolling left-right.

More than likey if you make a site on a 1024x768 screen and you view it on a 800x600 screen you have to scroll both ways.

mikey, you cant make things 1024 wide if you dont want the page scrolling left-right on a 800 screen.

To change the size of images, you should resize them in an art program and re-export the jpg or gif.
But for testing, you can use html to resize the image in the page. inside of the IMG tag, use width="someNumber".

For web sites I use 762x571(pixels) for web sites. Works great with screens smaller than 1024.

This all depends on how you created the page.
Is it table-based?
What size are your images? background images?

While things are starting to really shift to a standard of 1024x768 for web design, the fact is that the standard is still at 800x600 for a good deal of sites.

When you are designing your page, you need to take into account what resolution the masses are viewing their web browsers with.

Take a look here for some really good info about what browsers and resolutions people are using:

mikey, you need to change all of your images and tables to fit within that size. I don't think there is a solitary setting some place, so it's hard to tell you 'how to change it'. You just have to use html to build the page to the width you want.
