Sorry if this has been done before, but if it has it may not have been for a while.

What is your favorite movie and why?

The Ghost and Mrs Muir.....very old film(1946) in black and white starring Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney the crusty old sea captain who is now haunting his own home.

I just love it because I am a bit of romantic, I am interested in ghosts and the like, and it was written in a time when directors/writers could take a fairly simple tory and make it entertaining without lots of sex (not that I am adverse to sex) drugs, guns, car chases etc.

"Whistle Down The Wind" with Hayley Mills & Alan Bates. I just finished watching it and it's a stunning movie.

An extremely short, but definitely NOT all inclusive:
Excalibur
Blade Runner (Director's cut)
Shawshank Redemption
The Enchanted Cottage
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Reservoir Dogs
The FIRST Matrix movie
Anything Shakespeare whether it be the actual play or a modernization. Kenneth Branagh's period treatments, Baz Luhrmann's wicked Romeo + Juliet, or something like "10 Things I Hate About You" which is a total modernization of Taming of The Shrew - no "shakespeare's english". Except for "O". I HATED that)
SpaceBalls
Blazing Saddles
History of The World part....oh frak, if it's Mel Brooks, I love it!
Walk the Line
American History X
Alien Trilogy
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Full Metal Jacket
Pirates of Silicon Valley
Dog Day Afternoon
Reefer Madness
Rock n Rule ("My name is Mok, thanks a lot")
Any good Western - Fist Full of Dollars, Hang 'em High, The Unforgiven...when I decided to start building up my Westerns collection, Fist Full of Dollars was my first purchase :D

That's it off the top of my head.
My DVD collection consists only of 'my favorites' - if they're available. Why buy them if I don't want to watch it again at some point?

I notice that punkr0x0r has similar movie tastes, too, so I just copied and pasted my faves that were among them ;)

Hmm... I like the usual Girly Films

Pretty Woman
Dirty Dancing
The Wedding Planner (infact I seem to like ALL Jennifer Lopez films, how sad! "Angel Eyes" and "Enough" are also good...)

But I also like some non girly ones..

Shawshank Redemption
Green Mile
Dawn of the Dead (and "Shaun of the Dead")
28 Days Later

BUT my fave has to be "Lost in Translation" amazing and a very beautiful film!
