I need an (8) channel, on-location recording set-up using a MacBook Pro and either a Mackie Onyx 1620+firewire or a Presonus FireStudio as the front-end.
I'm looking for recommendations for recording and editing software that is:
1. Stable, reliable and fast using the Mac core audio host drivers
2. Has full editing capability
3. Can handle a few plug-ins, mainly a good reverb--nothing fancy.
This is for live recording and does not have to include any MIDI capability at all.
Choices for use with the Mackie are:
Traction-2 (included free)
Logic
Steinberg Cubase
Sonar (possibly)
Nuendo
Digital Performer
Choices for the Presonus are:
Steinberg Cubase LE (included free)
Steinberg Cubase Full version
Sonar
Nuendo
I'm coming from a ProTools background and also have a lot of experience using a Mackie 24/96-HDR. Of course, Digi won't let ProTools work with either of the above front-ends so PT is out of the running, and Digi won't be seeing any of my money.
I've tried Traction-2 and think it really sucks as its use as a multi-track editor. I've never seen a program that is so un-Mac like and counter intuitive. I love the Mackie HDR editor, as far as I'm concerned they dropped the ball on Traction-2.
I've checked the Prosonus forum and it looks like it doesn't work reliably with Sonar, but is OK with Cubase.
So, any recommendations for a reliable M-T editor that is easier to use than Traction?
Thanks.
