Mouse Question

Hello everyone-I picked up an Apple Pro Mouse off of eBay, and it seems to be working fine for the most part. I have a quick question, however. What do the side buttons do? I know in the Mighty Mouse you can activate it so it makes the dashboard come up, etc., but it doesn't work here. Do I need software? Here is a picture:

Sorry to say they aren't buttons, they don't do anything.

I have to confirm that, those are just there to make holding the mouse easier by providing a less slippery surface.
