Safari Freezing

one after another: What file and where is it stored? And why should you get rid of Safari, when you try to attach a file to a new email in Mail. Or are you using a webmailer? If so: did you try a different browser?
Some browsers seem to freeze when you are uploading the file, which can take several minutes depending on the filesize. Also you could check activity monitor to see what is happening
