I have just taken delivery of a refurb Mac (my first Mac :) ) and on checking the 80gb hard drive I was surprised to see that it said 'capacity 74Gb' and 'available 55gb'.

I had not loaded anything on to it apart from some photos (1.5Gb) so called Apple today and they ran me through the Hard Drive to see how large the folders were, as follows:

Me: 1.84Gb
Applications: 4.23Gb
Library: 9.22Gb
System: 1.75Gb

Are these normal HD usage sizes for a Macbook running Tiger? I did a standard installation when i first started the machine up i.e. let the machine guide me. My friend has an older OS (Panther?) and her library is only 3.75Gbs.

Sounds about right to me. That includes the iLife apps and all the stuff they need (Garageband loops etc.) You can reclaim some space by deleting what you don't need. Doing a search here or at Google should bring something up or maybe someone here knows a little more than I on the subject...

EDIT: I just searched for "Free up HD space on OS x" on Google and found

This and This.

I'm sure there's more (better) info about too, but I only searched quickly.

That sounds about right. My MacBook came with 55gb of free space also.
