OS X battery gauge shows an "X"

All of a sudden, my battery gauge in OS X shows an X... Before, it used to show the % of battery life left and I have no idea what this X means.

Any ideas?

It means your battery isn't properly installed in the computer, and its showing that there is no battery in the computer. Try reseating the battery.
