I have a beige G3 266. I have just bought a VGA 22" LCD Monitor which connects through a DB-15 M To VGA SVGA HD-15 F Monitor Adapter. It seems OK but the instructions say to set the screen resolution up to 1680 x 1050 which the G3 doesn't have. Can you uprade the video drivers to get the extra resolution or do I need a new Mac PCI video card?

Monitor resolution is a function of the video card and video memory. The monitor might have a maximum resolution of 1680x1050 but will work fine at 800x600 or 1024x768, although it might look stretched out.

If you want, you can upgrade your video card to one with more video memory to run higher resolutions. Try looking here for information on the beige G3: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3-ZONE/

I'm pretty sure 1024x768 is about the highest resolution you'll ever get out of a beige G3 without a new video card. Not worth it, IMHO.

Also not worth it, IMHO...except in cases of special need or affection.

If that machine still does what he needs it to do, then there is no need to get a new one.
Bigger, faster, and newer does not always equate to "better".
