When you download files how do you get them to download to the hard drive rather than onto the desktop??

Check Safari Preferences (Click "Safari" in the menu bar, pull down to Preferences). Under the General tab, you'll see Downloads saved to:

BTW, the Desktop is just a folder on your hard drive.
