Pipe key under Remote Desktop

Does anyone know how I use the pipe key when i'm rdp'ing into a windows machine from my macbook. I've tried every key and Shift+everykey but no joy. Any ideas? Thanks

It's generally the same key as the backslash (\) key about Return/enter. You have to press Shift \ to produce |.

That's where it is on my keyboard but when I press that in windows I get the tilda ~ and when I press what is tilda on my keyboard I get a key that is not even on my physical keyboard layout
