Mac Mail: lost the downloading 'pinwheel'

When checking for new mail in Mac Mail I used to see the spinning circle of black lines appear next to the Inbox. Now that I have more than one account I don't see it anymore. If I disable all but one account I see it again.

Anything I can do to get it back with more than one active account?
