slower fps when another window is on top

has anybody else noticed that when playing an online game or watchin a video the fps get slower when its not ur current window? like im playin a game, then somebody IM's me, i click onto the IM box and the game's fps drop waayyyy down until i click back onto it...is this a normal thing? it happens on my imac too btw, which has a 256mb graphics card...

Many programs detect when they are not the primary focus and reduce their speed accordingly. This is to allow the foreground process (the thing that you're ostensibly most interested in) to have as many system resources as possible. There is a very interesting article about how Safari manages such things here
