got a folder that will not delete, everytime i try to empty trash it causes a panic.
I have tried in terminal rm -rf FOLDER-NAME - PANIC
I have tried oynx - force empty - PANIC
I have tried single user mode - /sbin/fsck -f then /sbin/mount -uw / , then got to desktop via cd .... then typed rm -rf FOLDER-NAME .... yep! .... PANIC!!!!

Repaired permissions , Repaired Disk , still no joy!

Stumped ...... Will run TechTool Pro and see if that helps, but i have already run that once already! :(

Long time no see, my friend Adrian!

Another thing to try... Create a new user account.

Drag the folder out of the trash to the Users/Shared folder.

Log out of your usual account and log in the new user account. Go to the Shared folder, drag and drop in the Trash the recalcitrant folder. Log out.

Log back in your usual account. Go to the System Prefs and in the Accounts pane, delete the new account you have just created. That will get rid of the folder. Ought to, anyhow.

Let us know how it goes, Adrian.

Everything looks fine there.... I was (we are) looking for immutable file Flags... The command you just used pulled up the user files... There are no "USER immutable Flags" within your trash....

Now try the same thing for System immutable Flags. Let's hope you don't have any.... The USER immutable Flags are easy to remove.. the SYSTEM immutables.. well.. not so much.

Copy/paste the following command, and let us know what the results are... Hopefully nothing:

sudo ls -aloR /.Trashes

If the results of the above command are nothing, as I'll bet they are...

Try this:

Click and hold on the Trash icon.
A Menu will pop-up
Now press & hold the OPTION Key
While still holding the OPTION key Click "Empty Trash" in the popped-up menu.
Release the Option key.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Copy/Paste the following in Terminal: **Do NOT change anything in this command.
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
The Terminal will ask for your User Password... While typing your user password, you will NOT see what you are typing... Press enter when done.
After that... Log out then back into your account.
Does that help????
Yep, did the supervisor do ( sudo ) command, I am about to do as MHC suggested , And Thanks MHC for the suggestion! I ( Mac ) was to busy with Panics to say thankyou!
I have tracked it down to one file in the trash, which was an ISO file of **cough** vista beta!
You use an admin account on a daily basis, yes? I didn't mean the root account, I meant the usual every day type of account.
In your usual admin account, create a new admin account. Drag the problematic files/folder to the Users/Shared folder. Log out of your account and log in the new admin account. Go to the Shared folder, drag the stuff to the trash, log out. Log in your usual admin account, delete new account with the files in its trash.
sudo rm
BEFORE you press enter... drag the file into terminal... hit ENTER....
Nope, made new user account , put the problem file into its desktop , log out, log into main account , delete user , and PANIC!!!!
I have even booted up from an external firewire drive and tried deleting the file, and it PANICS there too!
Will try the sudo rm now, but i'm gussing i'm going to have to power down again, and boot back up!!
If you were running that Vista .iso in Parallels or Bootcamp, you may need to delete/ reinstall Parallels, or remove bootcamp... Just thinking out loud (visually :D).. the "system" may still be "connected to that iso, thus unwilling to commit "suicide"...
